Gold for Monrovia 12s at Jr. Nationals

ATLANTA (July 1, 2011) – The championship court for the 2011 USA Volleyball Girls’ Junior National Championships, located inside theGeorgia World Congress Center, was the first place that Starlings-Monrovia 12 (Southern California) visited when arriving in Atlanta as the team prepared to play in the event which is being held from June 25-July 4.

Victoria Ashkinos (Pasadena, Calif.) is a member of Starlings-Monrovia 12 and has her father, Ben Ashkinos, as an assistant coach. Victoria voiced that the team was star-struck when they walked into the tournament venue.

“When we came in Monday, we were really intimidated with how it was,” said the younger Ashkinos. “We felt so small and normally on the court, we feel big. We were surrounded by so many amazing teams and it made us nervous and felt out of place.”

Special girl and Edeline to meet

By · June 16, 2011 · Filed in 2011, Club News · No Comments »
Note from Byron: Not only did this 11-year-old Starling take a first in the Essay Contest but she has been doing remarkable things for Haiti as shown below. She will meet Edeline at the Opening Ceremonies of the 2011 Starlings National Tournament.
From Director Mary Beiler:
I just wanted to recognize one of our 12s players. Cassidy Lane, 5th grader, Santee 12s Jeff, was so moved by Edeline’s story about the school that she not only entered the Literary Art contest but has been doing her own fundraising to help donate to the cause. She made brownies and chocolate covered strawberries for one of the tournaments and raised $60 for the project. She is still working on other fundraisers now to raise more.

John Kessel visits Tuba City for clinic

By · June 7, 2011 · Filed in Club News · No Comments »
Our tireless champion, John Kessel, drove about 100 hours each way from Colorado Springs to Tuba City to give this clinic for our Starlings program on the Navajo reservation.
Below gives an idea of the event’s success.  As always, we are deeply indebted to John.

Hi Carol – Enjoyed the time together a lot. Some GREAT young kids there, and I think the ideas they have, and the CDs, should help them get even better faster…  Thanks for getting April and other coaches/teachers there to learn too. I made it back “early” at 1245 am, and had a great staff meeting at 8 am. Hope those kids there teach what they were taught and those missing it, get the benefits too!
