Starlings open National Tournament with Haiti in mind

Over 120 teams headed to San Diego with mission of fun, fundraising

SAN DIEGO – Although media coverage has long since faded, large portions of Haiti remain in rubble after the catastrophic January 2010 earthquake.

One group of girls is hoping to change that by embracing the sport they love.

Starlings Volleyball Club USA will host its 14th annual Starlings National Championship June 17-19 in San Diego. The tournament is an annual celebration of the nonprofit organization’s holistic approach of developing the body, mind and spirit of the young athlete.

Over 120 teams from across the country in four age divisions will play during three days of competition. But before a single volleyball is served, the tournament kicks off June 16 with its Opening Ceremony, a fun and festive event that this year focuses on helping children in Haiti.

This year’s special guest will once again be Edeline Felizor, a survivor of the 2010 Haiti earthquake who is rehabilitating in San Diego. Felizor was rescued from the rubble of her three-story teachers’ college. She had a broken neck and five fractured vertebrae, and was unable to receive medical care for her injuries for days. It was in a local clinic where she met Starlings Executive Director Byron Shewman, who arranged for her treatment both in Haiti, and later, in San Diego.

A teacher and nurse by training, Felizor dreams of returning to Haiti to build and oversee a school. The Starlings have pledged support both financially and creatively. Despite their own economic challenges, players have raised thousands of dollars to help children in Haiti and to support Project Edeline. The subject is also the theme of the 2011 Starlings Literary/Art Contest. For more on the project, visit www.starlings.org/2011-literary-art-contest/.

Schedule of events:

  • Thursday, June 16 – Opening Ceremony at Sweetwater High School, 7 p.m.

Celebration includes presentation of annual Literary/Art Contest winners. Special appearance by Edeline Felizor, survivor of 2010 Haiti earthquake and inspiration behind Project Edeline.

  • Friday-Saturday, June 17-18 – Starlings National Tournament, Day I & II

Sites include Alliant University and San Diego City College’s Harry West Gym. Matches begin on both days at 9 a.m. Play is scheduled to end on Friday at 9 p.m. and Saturday at 9 p.m.

Sunday, June 19 – Starlings National Tournament, Final Day

Tournament concludes with play at Alliant University and San Diego City College’s Harry West Gym. 18s final is expected to begin at 6 p.m. at Alliant. Opportunity for interviews following match.

###

Beginning with a single inner-city San Diego team in 1996, today Starlings is the largest junior volleyball club in the nation ─ serving some 3,000 girls in 50-plus clubs across America. The guiding concept has been to provide an opportunity for girls (ages 10-18) to participate regardless of their socioeconomic background. Club dues, if any, are a fraction of most junior club costs and no girl is turned away because of inability to pay.

Project Edeline to launch (with Starlings too)

By · April 1, 2011 · Filed in In the News · No Comments »

I’ve been working hard with Nicole Vargas (who did a remarkable job on this plan) to complete this new plan. I hope you will take the time to read it. I think it has some bold and novel ideas that can be more efficient in Haiti.

2011 Starlings Literary/Art Contest

Donate to Project Edeline

Again, through on the twists and turns since the day I met Edeline, here is a project which seems to include all former aspirations to best help Haiti and gratifies my wish to do something significant based on Edeline, her life, and her aspirations….for Haiti.

We are printing up color copies today or tomorrow for Edeline to present with myself at various venues. This one has no budget included but the cost will approach $200,000. In the first day, I got $8,000 committed from two good friends and I have personally committed $5,000. We have $13,000 already.

The budget (will send soon as I am refining it) includes buying the land, building the school as well as staffing and operations in Year 1. Obviously, we won’t have to buy land or build as much after the first year. Beyond that, the concept is designed to self-fund (at least a large part of it) by arts/crafts programs by the children which will be used to fundraise in the U.S.

We will adapt this project to the annual Starlings Literary/Art Contest and campaign this year. I will have details to announce within a week.

Thanks for all of your support and patience. I hope that many of you will join us, and Edeline, in this major undertaking.

Byron

Volleyball Tryouts at Western Texas

By · April 1, 2011 · Filed in In the News · No Comments »

Aloha Coaches (Please Spread the Word)! I wanted to send out an email to let y’all know that Western Texas College will be holding an official tryout on April 7th (Thursday) from 4:00-5:30 pm AND April 8th (Friday) from 4-5:30pm. There have been coaches asking for an official tryout and since we are still in need of filling our roster for the 2011 season, we will be holding a tryout. We are needing Middles and unfortunately our OH sadly had to quit cause of injuries so we are needing to look at OH/RS hitters. We have recruited our setters and DS/L. However, I am interested in bringing in a Utility player that can play multiple positions. So if you have a player that is a setter, DS and also can hit feel free to bring her in.

I have scholarship money to offer and for those who attend and are a good fit for our program we are willing to give them an offer. If you have players that may want to come feel free to email me or call to let me know so that I can create a list.

If your player plans on attending the tryout, they MUST bring a copy of their physical (Their high school physical is sufficient) AND they must fill out and sign our volleyball tryout form that is attached to this email.

Thank you for your time and for your hard work! Mahalo!

PS: My assistant coach and I will be attending the Lone Star Classic on April 22-24 and we want to start contacting 2012 players. Feel free to let us know any players that will be graduating in 2012 and we would love to start taking a look at them. Also, our roster may not be full from our April 7th and 8th tryout, so feel free to contact us if you still have any unsigned seniors for the 2011 season that we can take a look at especially if they are not able to attend the tryout. I will also be attending the April 9th Sun Country Tournament in Lubbock, to take a look at 2012 and 2011 players.
