Essay: Precious Manu, 16s

Precious Manu – Starlings South Bay 16 – 9th Grade

There are many ways we can help Haiti as an individual, but the results are better when we all work together, like a team. Michael Jackson once wrote, “There comes a time when we heed a certain call, and the world must come together as one.” In this case the world could be the Starlings as long as we are willing to lend a hand. We all know the troubles that the children of Haiti are facing. They show their conflicts on T.V., all over the Internet, the newspaper, billboards, and much more. Their problems are shown and advertised all around us. Yet, most of us just sit around and not even think twice about using a little of your time to aid the children of Haiti. Now is our chance to stand up and not only help the children, but to make a difference. We cannot just sit here and do nothing we need to put ourselves into action and start helping those in need, in Haiti. There are numerous ways we, Starlings, can help the children of Haiti. Those ways being: organizing a fundraiser tournament, making survival kits, collecting and donating toys, gifting baby materials, giving sports equipment, supplying some clothing, and donating the required ten dollars. These are the many ways we can help the children of Haiti. Some of our Starlings have already begun to go the extra mile. For example, the San Gabriel Starlings, who organized a mid season picnic raising $415. So let us try our hardest to do what we can do for the children of Haiti.

Doing a fundraising tournament can be a huge success. We can advertise about this tournament and got a lot of clubs and teams involved. Of course there will be an entry fee. The entry fee being from $5 to $10. All the money we earn we can send for the children of Haiti. To make this tournament a success we have to get the word out. This tournament if advertised well maybe will be able to be as big as the Starlings Nationals up in San Diego. Ways we can do this is by posting flyers at volleyball tournaments, on the Starling website, and facilities where club teams practice. Just by talking about the tournament we can get plenty of club teams to get excited and want to join in and play for such a fabulous cause. If we do a good job at spreading the word, then this can be an awesome fundraiser. This would not only be a great success, but we will be able to do what most of us love to do, play volleyball! Also this can be a great experience, and if we do a tournament for a cause like this many clubs will want to be just like us, the smart, great, caring, and loving Starlings. This fundraiser can make a big difference. Also while we are competing against each other we will all know that we are actually playing for something instead of just the love of playing volleyball. This could be really fun, I think we should take action and actually do this particular fundraiser This could be a lot of fun and helpful towards the children of Haiti.

Making survival kits can help the children of Haiti tremendously. If you did not, survival kits usually include many items. The main supplies that should be in the survival kits are food, cooking, cleaning and hygiene, safety, and games. We can ask other clubs to make these kits also and send it to the Starlings after they have completed them. This can be a lot of fun and also can bring a team closer together. So this can be considered a team bonding activity. After we have collected all of the survival kits we will be able to put them on their way to the people of Haiti, many children’s’ lives will be changed by these kits. Let us get started and start changing children’s lives.

Donation will be an awesome way to help the children of Haiti, too. We all know that there are many pieces of clothing that we do not even touch, or maybe even forget that you had that piece of clothing. Those pieces of clothing you do not use can be used by the children in Haiti who desperately need them. So there you have it your clothes just made another person warmer and happier. What a great feeling that you as an individual just made a difference in someone’s life. We can also donate our childhood toys to the children of Haiti. It may be difficult to give them up. All those childhood memories you had with them, but just know that you will still remember all those good times even if you do not have the toy that made these memories awaken. Just know if you do donate that someone else will be able to begin new memories with that toy. Everyone else starts digging in the basement, closet, garage, attic, storage, and wherever else your toys are hiding. After you find them dust them off and hand them over. Now another child has begun a new adventure with that toy you once had. Also from what I know is that many babies that are born do not have the proper materials to survive. Many babies are in need of diapers, food, and other baby necessities. We can donate as many of those items that we can grab hold oaf to Red Cross or Mother’s Kangaroo. These organizations have been helping and caring for the many babies that are sick or born premature. Due to them more babies have been saved and are able to begin their new lives. So let us help these organizations and even more children’s lives.

Everyone in America has heard or seen in first hand the difficulties of not only the children but the people of Haiti. We all know what they are going through and that they need as much help as they can get. Yet many of us ignore their call. I say that we, Starlings, must strive to be different from many of the other people in this world and take a stand and help the people of Haiti to the best of our ability. So let’s consider these suggestions that I have just made and actually get into action and do them. It would help the people of Haiti immensely. Like Michael Jackson said,” We are the World, We are the children, we are the ones who make a brighter day so let’s start giving.”
