Celebrating our 20th year of existence, the 2016 Starlings National Championship was an exceptional one. Held in San Diego, from the Opening Ceremony speeches by coaches, following the costumed march-in of teams, fun and friendship were felt everywhere.
On the playing side, the level of competition continues to grow with new clubs climbing to prominence. Perhaps the most exciting championship match came in the 18s finals when Palmdale came back to win the championship by two points in the tie-breaking game. Another tie-breaker decided the 16s winner when Tuba City defeated San Gabriel. Although Shonto, AZ once again displayed their strong program, their 14s and 12s teams finished second in both categories. The 14s was won by San Diego Navajo in another impressive comeback while the City of Los Angeles 12s took down Shonto for the gold medal.
Other impressive play was witnessed in club teams from Indianapolis, Cudahy, Tijuana and Brevard County. Despite the unusual heat wave, the referees (mostly from the Arizona Region) kept the excitement moving, helping to make this championship one of our most successful. Hugs and cheers terminated the event with the promise that all would return in 2017.
