2025 Winner: Ron Reyes, Eastlake Starlings
Write up of Ron:
Over 20 years ago, Ron Reyes founded the Eastlake Starlings program in Chula Vista, California, after seeking a local, affordable club for his teenage daughter. Following an introduction to Byron Shewman, Ron launched the Eastlake club with just three teams. Today, under his leadership, the program has grown to serve hundreds of girls each year, consistently fielding 11–15 teams annually—making Eastlake one of the largest Starlings clubs in the nation.
Ron’s influence extends far beyond the volleyball court. In 2018, he was recognized as Citizen of the Month by the City of Chula Vista for his outstanding community impact. Over the years, he has mentored countless players and coaches, with many former athletes returning to the program as coaches. They credit “Coach Ron” with shaping their character, leadership skills, and resilience.
Former player and current Eastlake coach, Aysa Duncga, shares:
“Coach Ron has created an environment where people want to stay in Eastlake Starlings. He doesn’t coach just to win games. He mentors individuals and builds confidence in people. Beyond volleyball, Coach Ron taught me how to lead, how to be resilient, and how to work with integrity. He pushed me to grow and face challenges head-on. As a coach, I’ve leaned on him for guidance many times. No matter what I’m going through, he’s always there with honest advice and genuine care.”
Through his unwavering commitment, mentorship, and vision, Ron Reyes embodies the spirit and legacy of Starlings USA co-founder Byron Shewman—making him a truly deserving recipient of the Byron Shewman Director of the Year Award.
